Let’s face it, cruising is just plain cool and about as easy as travel can get. They handle just about everything for you, eliminate much of the hassle of prior planning, and go as luxury as your budget will afford. Let us help point you in the right direction.
For some, deciding whether to choose between an overland coach tour or a cruise trip is a very easy choice. For others, it’s full of trade-offs and mixed feelings. Each has its merits and every person will feel quite differently on which and why one is better. Ultimately, it can depend on a myriad of considerations based on personal preferences. For example, are you looking for something adventurous or relaxing, do you want to visit a ton of locations or just a few, how much time do you have, are you looking for romance, and so on.
Major Things to Consider
- Cruises can cover a lot of destination countries and ports of call. Choosing your preferred destinations like the Mediterranean, Scandinavian which can include the Baltics and Russia in some cases, or cruising the British Isles or Ireland.
- Are you traveling by yourself, with your partner, family, or even multi-generational (i.e. are you traveling with older passengers), and whether or not you want something romantic that does not allow kids?
Pros | Cons |
Safety, ease of travel, less logistical planning ahead of time | Large crowds on the ship |
No need to book accommodation/hotels | Never get to overnight in place, have to be back on board every night at a specified time |
Only unpack once | Slow to disembark with so many people on board |
Same bed throughout the trip | Arrive in major port cities, not small quaint towns |
Get to see lots of ports and cities in many different countries | Lack of spontaneity, less magic, tours tend to be very structured |
Most costs are upfront and more budget-friendly | Rarely dine at local restaurants, rather most eat on the ship because it’s included with their package |
More efficient to wake up in a new city every morning, | Meet fewer locals, time in cities is too fast or limited |
Less transport headache getting to/from next destination | Less cultural immersion |
Entertainment is included on the ships | Stuck on a ship a lot, have cancelled ports occasionally due to weather or mechanical issues |
Great for kids and seniors | Seasickness if seas are rough or stormy |
More time for relaxation | Lots of extra charges and “nickel and diming”, slow internet |
